SDS
The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is the basic document constituting the communication tool in the supply chain.
The supplier of a chemical product classified as hazardous is obliged to provide the Safety Data Sheet in the official language of the country on the territory of which the product is placed on the market with the material at the latest on the day of the first delivery. The use of hazardous substances and mixtures in professional activities without the required safety data sheet is not allowed.
The safety data sheet contains information for professional users to take appropriate measures in the workplace to ensure safety and protection of the environment and human health.
The safety data sheet consists of 16 sections containing information on:
» the product and the hazardous substances it contains;
» suppliers;
» the risks associated with the product (product classification and labeling);
» risk management;
» physical properties of the product;
» waste management;
» transport requirements.
For a substance manufactured or imported above 10 tonnes per year, a chemical safety report will be attached to the registration dossier. The preparation of such a report is related to the chemical safety assessment.
For substances classified as dangerous or PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) or vPvB (very persistent and very bioaccumulative), an exposure assessment and risk characterization should be included in the registration dossier. In this case, exposure scenarios for the identified uses of the hazardous substance will be attached to the safety data sheets.
The safety data sheet should be updated when new information on risk management measures or new information on hazards becomes available, when an authorization has been granted or refused, and when a restriction has been applied. The updated safety data sheet should be provided to all recipients of the product to whom this product has been supplied in the last 12 months.
The safety data sheet must be drawn up and updated by properly trained persons having substantive knowledge for the professional development of individual sections.
